Though I love to do them, no I don't have time right now to do any more commissions. Sorry. I really am Working from the time I wake up, 6:30am, 'till the time I go to bed about 3:ooam. Every single day. Seriously.

I have too much on my plate, I know it and am once again digging myself out of a hole, but it is such a lovely hole to be in. I wouldn't trade it for anything..

Inking has been the bane of my existence for a while. I am slowly but surely figuring it out. Having the correct tools helps a lot. For noobish inkers like myself, I cannot stress that enough. The reason why all of the great inkers use the same equipment is that it works. Really well. There is a learning curve but once you get it, the results do absolutely pay off.

Great Time At the Show!

I had a blast yesterday at The Comic Book Show at it's new huge beautiful location. There seemed to be a good number of people there. I really couldn't tell I had my head down doing sketches the entire time. Above is one of those Sketches. It is the Cheshire Cat from Beyond Wonderland and it is for Dave (really it is for his Girlfriend who's name I can't remember) a friend and regular customer at Larry's Comics. I did a whole lot of sketching at the show but this is the only one I have a scan of. If anyone who ever gets a sketch off of me at a convention is reading this please send me photos or scans of the sketches I would greatly appreciate it. (especially the Zatanna, the Hulk(s), the Captain America, and the Dr. Fate I really dug how those turned out and I have no record of them.)

I know some of you that visit my blog are fellow podcast listeners. I would like to introduce some of you to one of the best produced, most interesting shows I have ever come across. The show is A Life Well Wasted by Robert Ashley. It is a Video game centric podcast that deals with the subject in a very interesting way. It doesn't talk about the latest releases, or any specific game. What it does do is look at gaming culture from a new perspective. From a bird's eye view of a life long gamer Robert looks at different aspects of of gaming through a reverent and irreverent lens. Making fun and holding dear one of his and my favorite hobbies, Video Games.

Nycomicon Comission Update

First off thank you to everyone who got commissions for NYComicon. I apologize for having to say no to everyone that I could not make time for.

I usually make sure payments are all set before I do any commissions, but I trust too much and now I have these two commissions, and no payment for either. This is a call to the people who requested them. If you don't want them, LMK, it's cool, I am not mad. I won't be pissy about it but I did have to say no to a few people who would have paid. If you don't let me know what is going on these are for sale the instant I walk into the show.

It is Civilians in The Comic Shop Day! oh and some artwork

Today is going to be weird when we go pick up our books. We are all going to go into our favorite Comic Book Shop and feel out of place. There are going to be Civies in OUR Shops. OUR SHOPS. I admit that anything that brings new business to comics is a good thing. This big media grab isn't even the worst grandstanding I have ever seen, so that is a plus. Of course what I am talking about is Amazing Spider-Man #583 with the Obama Crossover and infamous "fist punch heard round the world"(once you read the book you'll know what I mean). I hope this isn't the perfect storm of events that starts up another Speculator Boom. If we examine the past where we did have that fateful couple of years, we will notice a few alarming coincidences. An amazingly popular Batman Movie? Check. A death of one of the most beloved Super Heroes of all time? Check. And a book that is so well publisized in the mainstreem media that thousands of people who have never collected acomic book will suddenly flood OUR SHOPS? Check.

Sound Familiar? It should. These are the exact events that sparked off the last speculator boom and with the release of ASM #583 the circle of evil is complete. The Nerdpocalypse is coming. All we need now, the fourth horseman, if you will allow my indulgence, is for a large group of talent from Marvel to have an exodous and start up a new company. Or join Kirkman at Image.

The page above is the first version of Polis page 1. I have to do some corrections because of the cowboy. I guess No Country Foer Old Men really did influence me. What I got back from my Editor/Writer was "why does he look like the only Cobra villian on the page?" I dug the character but it will be changed. I just wanted to show you guys this version.

A few days ago Ugo ent. Bought the 1up network and proceeded to gut it like a fish.They cut through the company like Micheal Myers does teen flesh, without hesitation and emotionless. I was a huge fan of every podcast that those guys did and have been listening religiously for about 2 years now. All of that is gone now. Poof. No goodbyes, no final episode, just *poof*...gone. Some of the recently departed have gone on to do a new show over at Eat, Sleep, Game. I am asking for some of the people who frequent my site to go and listen to the new podcast, support what they do. These are all good people that have been recently been handed the shit end of the stick, something I know a bit about, and they didn't deserve it.

For the last 2 days I have been without heat, hot water, electricity, a home, my cell, my drafting table, my art supplies, and my car. I would personally like to thank Mistress Nature for the icy beating my life has taken over the last few days. There was a record breaking ice storm that brought down trees, power lines, and telephone poles into my driveway and home.

Upon hearing the first crack of the tree to start this fiasco @2am on Thursday night I knew we were in for some shit. The telephone pole into my front room, and the sparks from the transformer in the front yard really amped up the whole experience.

I am so HAPPY to be home and have back all of the amenities of home. I love heat, hot water, television, the internet, my marvel over sized coffee cups, and everything in my office.

I am going to do nothing but drink a coffee, watch some internet videos, and be warm for the next hour or so. After that I have to get back to the drafting table. Two days without working has fucked my schedule, but I am happy to have the ability back to do it.

Hopefully when I sleep tonight I wont be plagued by dreams of the Zombie Apocalypse.

I am actually feeling somewhat normal today. I haven't been able to do shit for almost 2 weeks but from what I am told the worst of it is behind me.

I am fucked on a few deadlines though. The double page spread above has been on the drafting table mocking me 90% done for a week and a half. I had enough energy to finally finish it tonight(this morning).

That is it for me have today's work laid, so I wont start with a blank page, and now time for sleep.

Hopefully 2 pages and a commission for tomorrow. Goddamn I hate being sick.

The Inkwell awards are an independent committed of industry professionals that have taken on the responsibility of recognizing excellence in the art form of inking. Once the Eisner's "dropped" their inking categories this group of individuals didn't take that shit lying down. They went out and created a fan voted award to recognize this oft overlooked and very unappreciated art form.

All of what they do come straight out of their pockets, but some of us in the biz recognize the importance of what they are doing and donate art to help supplement the cost. I believe in what the do and am a very vocal proponent of inking. So, when asked, I gave what I had on me at the time, and will do anything more to help support these guys.

So go help out and bid on some of the items that are up on eBay!

Some of the big companies are trying to limit inking because it lowers production cost, but I think inked artwork is so superior to straight pencils that we have to give some encouragement to the guys who are true superstars in this industry, they just never get noticed. Unless they are not there.

I just finished watching the series finale of The Shield. I think it is more than safe to say that it is and will always will be my favorite show.

I don't want to spoil anything for anybody, but damn was that a great episode. I was white knuckling it the entire time. What a way to go out. I know some people are going to bitch about the open ended ending, but it works for me.

I don't agree with the character of Vic Mackey all that often, but one of the things that he and I had in common is our deep love of our families. I think that is what kept him such an intriguing character to me all of this time. At most times I found what he did reprehensible and self serving, 2 things I am not, but when it came to his family, nothing was more important.

That is what serves as justice in this final episode. If I lost my entire family, just had it taken from me, I cannot think of a harsher punishment.

Funny.....as I sit here and type this, I realize that this is the basic plot of Epoch. What would I do if I had my family taken away from me? Who would I hurt, manipulate and kill to get them back?

The answer.....EVERYONE.

I don't know what that says about me, but it sure does make for some good funny books. When/if you ever read Epoch I hope you see what I mean.

I have read a few of my posts, and I know they come off a little bitchy.

I usually post at the end of a 16-20 hour day at the drafting table. I should stop doing that. Admittedly I am a wee bit cranky when I am tired. When I blog tired I bitch. Sorry. I really am not a cranky old curmudgeon. I got a full 8 hours of sleep last night and feel terrific this morning. I am enthusiastic and optimistic about life. I really do love penciling comics. It is my passion. If I was Bill Gates, Scrooge McDuck swimming in a pool of money rich I would still be drawing comics. I love this medium second only to my Wife and Son.

I have been particularly crabby about high panel count pages of late. They still are not my favorite thing to do, but I have grown to appreciate what they have been teaching me during the process of drawing them. I am constantly trying to improve my storytelling skills and my draftsmanship. These dense pages are an exercise in both, not to mention the compositional aspects of doing 12 panel pages.

The 12 panel page above is from issue 2 of Leprechaun, I am happy with how it turned out. What do you think?

A quick post before I go to podcast!

I guess I was in Comic Shop News today. I can't tell because they didn't put my last name.

Also, I am going to bitch a little.

I have no problem with high panel per page ratios, when it makes sense. It seems that, because I am a "little detail" artist I get a LOT of scripts with multiple 8,9,10,12, and 15! panel pages in the script. I can do it, but when it during an action scene, it is frustrating. Action scenes should move fast, and the more panels on a page the slower the action is going to be.

Check out the page above, it is, for the most part, a quiet "set up" page. Perfectly suited for a high panel count. When the fighting begins in a few pages I get a double page splash to play with. That is the fun stuff.

I guess what I am trying to say is...Writers....let your artists play a little. 3 and four panel pages are fun. Splashes even more so. They are the little scraps of sweets that we get in between the big meals of 12 panel pages.

Today is a scan day.

First things last. Today was BostonComicon. It was PACKED. I had a great time and got to see a lot of old friends and also meet some new ones. I'll have to post some links to some of their work later, but right now it is 2 A.M. and I am fucking exhausted. All in all great show, can't wait for the next one.

Boston Comicon is THIS Sunday? Jesus unholy Christ this year has flown by!

I have been working my ass of on comics now for almost 9 months full time and it seems like I don't have nearly enough on the stands. Here is a little secret for all of you that want to make funny books for a living....what you write, pencil, ink, color, and/or letter will not be on the stands for MONTHS. Stuff that I did in March is being released next month, what I am doing today won't be out until Smarch next year, lousy Smarch weather. The character designs I did this morning wont see fruition for at least six months and the storyboards I am doing this afternoon won't see television until January. Here is another thing, a lot of smaller companies don't pay you when you are done with the work, you get paid after publication. which means that a lot of what you do today, you will not see a paycheck for for at least 4 months. Money management is a key skill you will need to survive if you ever want to make this into a career. If you don't have CONSISTENT work, your fucked. You will not have a paycheck for months.

Even with all of that, I wouldn't trade this for the world. This is what I have wanted to do since the first time I picked up a comic book. If I had a billion dollars I would still be drawing comics trying to make a name for myself in this industry.

I love it, all of it.

I hate Lost but I love me some Fringe. Can anyone make out this sequence of numbers, I got 566657y665 and I think there was a niner in there somewhere. I know that a lot of the images from the ARG are takes on the Fibinaci sequence and the golden ratio(used in composing artwork, to take it back to comics) but this sequence on the shell doesn't make any sense to me.

Rorsach 5 minute con sketch

I did this at the Comic Book Show in Massachusetts back in August. As with all artists we do a lot of con sketches but we never get scans of them, so the art is kind of "lost" . Unless it is an awesome fan who actually follows through with what they say and emails you a scan. For some reason Watchmen sketches have been awfully popular, that is all I did minus one Captain Cold sketch, at this show. So this post is for the rare fans who actually sends scans to the artists, we appreciate it.

I have been working on a project for a few weeks now and I haven't been able to say a godamn word about it. It is supposed to be announced sometime today. I posted this page as a tease. Can anyone guess what I working on? I don't expect anyone to comment, but it would be nice.

Time to digress. I get an average of 200,000 visits a week, and I am averaging .01 comments per day. WTF? I started this blog so I could interact with people who were into the same shit I was but I seem to be talking to my damn self. I guess talking to myself is OK. That way I am guaranteed stimulating conversation.

We did a "special" Monday episode to fill in after the holiday shipping schedule screwed up our recording schedule. Wednesday nights are the time when all of the Couchers are free to record. No books on Wednesday, no Podcast on Wednesday.

In This Episode we discussed the "Kirkman Manifesto" and reviewed a few books. We will have another show this Wednesday night. Next Wednesday is listener email week, so if you want your comments heard, send them before Wednesday the 17th. This is a 2 page sample of a project I recently wrapped. I don't know how much I can say about it, or if I am even supposed to show anything...fuck it, take a look.

I have been one busy productive beaver over the last few months working on 14 projects(and finishing them all under my deadlines). The problem is that I can't show most of it to anyone. That is an issue for me. I am a show off art heart. I theorize that this is the case for all artists, we are show offs. We all scream "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!" It is partly that attention that keeps us going. Conventions are a great place to sell some shit and meet fans, but really, they are best when they give us that little ego boost that keeps us working until 2:30am everyday.

So....... fuck it! Here is some pages I am probably going to be "spoken to" about. That is ok , I need that boost more than I hate pissing off editors:)
